Great article. But I'd push back on your point that paramilitaries have been absent from the American scene. We've had right-wing terrorists since the KKK, but in the 90s, we saw the rise of actual militia groups - armed to the teeth and just itching to hurt some liberals. Ask an abortion clinic if right-wing militias exist. Or the folks at the Murrah Building in OKC. Or any of the many, many victims of what has long been known to be the biggest threat to national security for decades: right-wing terrorists.

What's scary is that now, they have a Dear Leader to command them.
