I've heard a variation of that same story from a lot of people. Myself, I had the mirror image experience: of having judgy right-wing types look down on us, shame us, make fun of us for being poor, for only having a single mom. Or, just as bad, treat us as charity cases.
I think it just goes to show it's really about class more than political affiliation.
