Not to be nit-picky, but H.H. Holmes was far from America's first serial killer. Brothers Micajah and Wiley Harpe probably were - they killed over 30 people between 1797 and 1803.

I will grant you that he was certainly the most cunning, and the Murder Castle is one of a kind.
