To be clear, I’m not saying all suburbs are like this. The suburbs — and urban neighborhoods — we had before the 90s were great places to raise kids. I’ve lived in neighborhoods like this, where a lot of the parents and kids walk to school, where kids ride their bikes and play together in yards and on the streets. They’re great.

It’s specifically the *modern* suburban design, as I explained in the story, that’s problematic. When everyone is hidden away behind giant garages and privacy fences, and you have to get into your car to drive anywhere, there is no sense of community because no one sees one another. If you click on the links in the story, there have been studies done on this kind of design, and it all points to it not being good for safety or mental health.
