Umair, I’m normally a big fan of your writing, but I think you missed the elephant in the room with this one. Here in the US, we haven’t had any real leftists in power since, well, maybe not ever, but definitely not since the 70s. Popular leftist leaders of the 60s and 70s were either arrested or assassinated. Reagan and his enablers pretty much destroyed the unions and set the tone for hating anything “liberal” in the 80s. In the 90s, Clinton (and the Democratic party he led) fully capitulated to the neoliberal orthodoxy. The only thing what was left of “the left” was allowed to have any say over is personal stuff like sexual orientation or gender identity. Any structural critiques of capitalism — you know, the stuff that has actual relevance to most Americans — have been strictly verboten for decades. That’s why the US “left” is so irrelevant.
