Well the point of the episode was to show the horrors of hate, bigotry, and war — something Serling was all about. In the Vietnam War — like in most wars — innocent civilians were often bombed, and yes, our own soldiers committed atrocities. We know this because they told us. It was only the Reagan whitewashing that pushed all the uncomfortable truths about that awful war down the memory hole.
