While I disagree with you on the death penalty — I think if we execute even one innocent person, that’s murder, and that’s not acceptable to me — I appreciate your perspective. I totally agree about Misskelley. It angers me very much the way he was manipulated into that “confession.”
Anyway, which stepfather are you suspecting? At first I thought it might be Mark Byers, as he was acting like a guilty man, “protesting too much.” But there was no evidence. And after the private investigator looked at the crime scene evidence, they found hairs from another boy’s step-dad and his friend in the bindings. So…there’s that.
What’s also interesting to me is that there are apparently many people who are still convinced those three are guilty. This story, and no other, garners a lot of hateful, irate responses. I’m sure you read my piece about how one person even found where I work and sent a bunch of ranting e-mails to me there. I think it’s the “Satanic” aspect of it. A bunch of, well, superstitious people swallowed that hook, line, and sinker. They believe the WM3 aren’t just guilty, they are EVIL.
Anyway, thank you again for sharing your perspective on such a complex case!
