You’re right. She was born with a brain infection, and there’s evidence (and nurses’ suspicions) that Marybeth might have tried to induce labor in herself, possibly using a sharp object like a knitting needle, in order to have the baby be born on Christmas. But all she did was introduce an infection into the baby instead. So sad.
